Strong fishing in Telluride this week
February 29th
Strong fishing reports have rolled in from all around the region this week. In the south, the San Juan has enjoyed one of its best winters in many years. The State of New Mexico did some heavy streambed improvement above the Texas Hole, resulting in much improved structure for upper river wade fishermen. This has drawn crowds, but the San Juan always draws crowds. Check it out on a weekday! Nymphing has been more productive than dry fly fishing (no surprise, in the winter), with micro-sized midge and BWO patterns leading the way.
The Animas, through Durango and downstream toward the state line, has been kicking out some really big fish in the last month. Our great friend Gina landed a 24" brown earlier a couple weeks ago on a big old streamer...our favorite way to fish the Animas. March should be terrific, so hit it up if you're driving through Durango town.
As reported on our fishing conditions page, the San Miguel and Gunnison are fishing exceptional. The Uncompahgre is holding its own at Pa-Co and downstream through Montrose, but the San Miguel and Gunny are most recommended.
